Folic acid is recommended for normal foetal growth in pregnancy. It should be taken at least six months before pregnancy begins and continued throughout the pregnancy. Folic acid is needed by the body to make nucleic acids - the genetic material of cells - and so is required for the processes of cell division, growth and reproduction. It is also vital for the formation of red blood cells by the bone marrow and for the development and proper function of the central nervous system. By ensuring that sufficient folic acid is supplied to the body, we can reduce the risk of developing anaemia. This vitamin can promote healthier-looking skin and when taken with other B-complex vitamins, may act to delay hair turning grey. Very popular with pregnant women, these tablets are also favoured by women taking the contraceptive pill.
